Stevie Ray to induct Booker T into WWE Hall of Fame

Stevie Ray to induct Booker T into WWE Hall of Fame

As revealed in a Tout recorded at WrestleMania Axxess Thursday night, Booker T will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his brother and former tag team partner, Stevie Ray, in Madison Square Garden.

?To have my brother induct me is the only way it should be,? an emotional Booker told WWE.com moments after the announcement. ?I followed my brother around when I was a little bitty kid. I wanted to be like him.?

Breaking into sports-entertainment together as The Huffman Brothers, the siblings got their big break in World Championship Wrestling in 1993, under the memorable name of Harlem Heat. Introduced as Kane and Kole, Booker T and Stevie Ray found their stride the following year when they changed their names, linked up with the great Sherri Martel and won their first WCW Tag Team Championships. By 1999, when the brothers competed as a duo for the last time, they had beaten teams like The Steiners and Sting & Lex Luger to claim the titles on 10 separate occasions ? a WCW record that no other duo came close to touching.

?All those years on the road, knowing I had backup gave me what I needed to go out and perform at the highest level I possibly could,? the former World Heavyweight Champion and SmackDown?s current General Manager said. ?My brother was always my biggest supporter.?

Stevie Ray and Booker T were at odds when WCW was purchased by WWE in 2001, and Stevie never joined his brother in WWE. Since that time, sports-entertainment fans have been anxiously anticipating a Harlem Heat reunion. They will finally get it on Saturday, April 6, when the most successful team in WCW history gets back together for one very special night.

As the soon-to-be WWE Hall of Famer said, ?This may be the one last chance people get to see Booker T and Stevie Ray together on stage."

Senate Approves School Funding Measure Over Tax Hike Concerns ...

Voter approval would be required for the $1 billion statewide tax increase

DENVER ? The Colorado Senate on Tuesday approved the School Finance Act, which aims to implement a $1 billion plus statewide tax increase to fund K-12 schools ? but which some say shortchanges charter schools and does not ensure equitable public education financing. Tax monies would also be redistributed from upper income school districts to poorer rural and urban areas in the state under the legislation, which passed on a party-line vote.

The bill, sponsored by Democrat state Sens. Rollie Heath of Boulder and Michael Johnson of Denver, was whispered to be in the works last fall after the passage of $1.1 billion in school bonds and mill levy hikes in school districts throughout Colorado.

According to the Colorado Education Association (CEA), perhaps the state?s strongest union, the goal was to add another $2.75 billion in public school coffers in 2013 ? and to repeal the Tax Payers Bill of Rights (TABOR), the Gallagher Amendment and Amendment 23 in 2014.

The plan could still take shape, but for now Heath and Johnston are pushing Senate Bill 213, a measure that would revise the funding formula for public schools.

Voter approval would be required for the $1 billion statewide tax increase.

The bill, which passed the Senate on a party line vote Tuesday, moves to the House for consideration.

?Senate Bill 213 is tied to one, if not the largest, tax increases in Colorado?s history, and is being done so under the name of reform which is inaccurate,? said State Sen. Mark Scheffel (R-Parker).

?Everyone in the Senate wants to invest in the students of this state,? he added, ?but reforms to improve education are not in this bill. There is no accountability for the additional money.?

Sen. Rollie Heath (D-Boulder) bristled at Scheffel?s remarks and declared, ?Colorado legislators have passed the ?toughest reform package in the country? We have done our duty.?

Senate Republicans lamented the bill?s formula which some say shortchanges charter schools.

?The charter school discrimination that happens in this bill is really disturbing when you look at (their) success,? said Sen. Scott Renfroe (R-Greeley), who served 8 years on a school board and helped to establish a charter school, which his children now attend.

The proposed new formula under SB 213 applies what is called an ?ability-to-pay? factor.? Some districts would get their education funding stripped by millions due to the bill?s redistribution mechanism, and those funds would be detoured to lower-income school districts.

According to The Denver Post, the proposal would also add $70 million to teaching at-risk students and English language learners. The measure would also direct 80 percent more funding to educate students who are both at-risk and English learners.

Some oppose the measure because districts considered ?more affluent? would then be pressured to raise their own property taxes to stay even, essentially coaxing them to either raise taxes in order to tap state matching funds, or don?t raise taxes and deal with lower levels of funding.

Steamboat Springs School District Finance Director Dale Mellor told Steamboat Today that the measure, if passed by voters, would force the district to seek between $2.2 million and $2.6 million in additional property taxes each year from voters to offset potential cuts in state funding.

?The state will be asking voters to come up with around $1 billion for education, and then our district is going to have to go back to our own voters and ask for more money,? Mellor said. ?It?s almost like we?re double dipping here.?

Garfield School District Re-2, which encompasses schools in Rifle, Silt and New Castle could see a loss in state funding of more than $6 million per year, which local property taxpayers would be asked to make up.

The bill could throw Douglas County, where it may be difficult to raise taxes, directly in the boxing ring with school districts like Denver that have no problem raising taxes.? If Douglas County is unable to get its voters to raise taxes, they would essentially lose state funds by letting the state allocate those monies to other districts.

Google Play Sound Search now available in the UK

Google Play Sound Search

"What's this song?" working in Google Now as well

Google's Sound Search, which lets users identify music tracks and artists by letting their phone listen to them, is branching out from the U.S. to include users in the U.K. In addition to the stand-alone app and widget for Sound Search, the same functionality also seems to be working within Google Now for U.K. users. Saying "What's this song?" then letting it listen will field results.

While the app's changelog hasn't been updated to reflect it, there has been an update in the Play Store and our own Alex Dobie in the U.K. is confirming that it does work now. Head to the Play Store link above to grab your download and test it out, and let us know in the comments if it's working in any other new countries.

Putin foe Navalny to be put on trial in Russia this month

By Alissa de Carbonnel

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A prominent Russian opposition leader will stand trial for theft this month, a court said on Wednesday, in what appeared to be a tough signal to critics of President Vladimir Putin who hope to revive a street protest movement in May.

Alexei Navalny, an anti-graft blogger and leader of protests last year whose case has been compared to the prosecution of oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky during Putin's first stint in the presidency in 2000-2008, is to go on trial on April 17.

He faces up to ten years in prison if found guilty of stealing 16 million roubles ($512,000) worth of timber from a state firm in Russia's remote Kirov region when he worked there as an adviser to the company, Kirovles, in 2009.

Navalny has denied wrongdoing in the timber case as well as separate cases in which he is accused of defrauding a mail transport company and stealing funds from a political party.

The 36-year-old activist says the allegations are "absurd" and part of a Kremlin strategy to intimidate critics and stifle anti-government protests that started last year.

"I have no doubt I will be found guilty, or a case so obviously trumped-up would not have made it to court," he wrote last week on his blog. "If the verdict was ... not dictated by telephone from the presidential administration, we would be living in a different country."

The setting of the trial date prompted an outcry from activists, who said it was grounds to attend a rally planned on May 6, anniversary of a protest held on the eve of Putin's inauguration to a new six-year term last year.

In a Facebook page dedicated to the protest, some promised to travel across the country to support Navalny at the trial in Kirov, 900 km (560 miles) northeast of Moscow.

Navalny's lawyer, Vadim Kobzev, accused the court of violating the law by refusing to hold any pre-trial hearings. He compared the case to that against Khodorkovsky, whose jailing is seen by foes of Putin as a politically motivated act of revenge.

Since Putin returned to the Kremlin, investigators have searched the homes of opposition leaders and brought cases against dozens of activists, accusing them of committing violent acts at the protest on May 6, 2012.

His United Russia party has passed laws that increase fines for protesters who step out of line, tighten controls on foreign-funded lobby groups and toughen rules on Internet communications by making slander a criminal offence.

Opposition leaders say the laws are part of a campaign to stifle dissent and discredit leaders of a protest movement that at its peak saw 100,000 in the streets of Moscow last year.

"It's like the Soviet-era cases against dissidents. The authorities' main task is not so much to persecute but to defile and compromise the opposition," said politician Vladimir Ryzhkov, a protest leader. "That is why a conviction is needed."

http://www.glammedia.com/verticals/foodie-com/foodie-top-100-restaurants-of-the-world/Glam Media has built a company around digital advertising and publishing, but today it announced that it's getting into the print business, with the release of a book version of its Foodie Top 100 Restaurants Worldwide guide. Other online companies have released their own books and booklets, but they're usually just a marketing gimmick, rather than a serious publishing effort. In this case, however, CEO Samir Arora said the book represents "a pretty big investment," and it's coming out from a real publisher, Chronicle Books.
