Boeing 787 Dreamliner completes flight check, certification still awaits (update)

It wouldn't surprise us to learn that more than a few Boeing officials had their fingers crossed this morning in Everett, Washington. That's because the 787 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time since being grounded in an effort to demonstrate a proper fix to that nasty overheating issue that's plagued the airliner's battery. The test flight, known as a functional flight check, lasted approximately two hours and will give the folks at Boeing an opportunity to examine data from the outing in advance of the 787's single certification flight -- a process that's otherwise known as one and done.

Update: This article originally stated that this is the first time the 787 Dreamliner has flown since being grounded, which is incorrect. Today's test flight is the first time the 787 Dreamliner has flown since the FAA-approved battery fix has been in place.

Magic 2014 coming soon to Android

Look, we all know that you have a really bitchin' black/blue Magic: The Gathering deck tucked somewhere in the closet from high school, so it's okay if you're a little excited that the famous trading card game is finding its way to Android devices later this year. We got some time to play it at PAX East 2013, and it proved to be as reliable a game as its predecessor.

If the personal really is political, then the choices moms make become fodder for us all. In some cases, even the definition of ?mother? is changing. Here are six recent picks about extraordinary moms, stories that reflect a few of the many considerations modern childbearing women must make.

Dream Map to a Mind Seized
Amy Leal ? Chronicle of Higher Education ? December 2012

The author takes time off from teaching to aid her autistic son.

?As an English professor, I teach the art and science of words?their history and literature, their prose and poetry, their logic and their magic. When I plow through the niceties of syntax with my students, I try to pique their interest by pointing out something the essayist Lewis Thomas once noted: Grammar and glamour (originally, ?to cast a spell on?) share etymological roots, and it is no accident that we use the word "spell" to mean both the alphabetic configuration of a word as well as an incantation. Words have power; the proper concatenation of them can conjure a sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice, as Coleridge conceived it, and enact the impossible.

?But how do I empower someone without language, sign, or gesture? What is it like to experience aphasia, dysnomia, auditory and visual distortions, and variable physical sensations? At times I imagine that entering into my son's sensory world?his own particular neurocosm, perhaps I should say?is a bit like walking into Lewis Carroll's Wood With No Names.?

My Mother, My Daughter
Samantha Irby ? Rumpus ? June 2012

A young girl cares for her mother after a stroke.

?You don?t just get to withdraw from your child life while making sure your disabled mother doesn?t set the apartment on fire because her fingers can no longer close firmly around a cigarette. There is no ?opt out? button on adolescence. I would divide myself into two people: the happy, smiling person who needed to make friends and appear to be having a well-adjusted childhood during the day; and my mother?s mother and nursemaid and caretaker and friend at night.?

Parents of a Certain Age
Lisa Miller ? New York ? September 2011

How old is too old to get pregnant?

?It is nearly impossible to have a baby at 50 by accident. ?Oops? does not happen; that momentary abandonment of good sense or caution will almost never result in a pregnancy. No matter how a child is procured, whether through technology or adoption, her 50-year-old parents have likely gone through some kind of hell?paperwork, blood tests, questionnaires, waiting, visa applications, mood swings, marital discord, and recalibration of expectations?to have her. These are the most wanted of children. And their parents, some would argue, can give them something that the youngest and prettiest don?t have: the wisdom of age and an abiding sense that life is a precious gift not to be wasted.?

Meet the Twiblings
Melanie Thernstrom ? New York Times Magazine ? December 2010

On the complicated process of surrogacy and the many definitions of ?mother.?

?And once we made the decision to have children this way, and put away regret, I felt happier embracing it than just tolerating it. There was even something I liked about the idea of a family created by many hands, like one of those community quilt projects, pietra dura, or a mosaic whose beauty arises from broken shards. If it takes a village to raise a child, why not begin with conception? When I tried to think about why I don?t want to have donor-and-surrogacy amnesia, it isn?t that it seems unfair to them (although it is), but that it erases our own experience of how our children came to be. At a basic level, the fact that our children originated through the good will of strangers feels like an auspicious beginning.?

Pregnant Pause?
Alyssa Giacobbe ? Boston Magazine ? December 2012

To some people?s ire, pregnant women are exercising more personal judgment about alcohol consumption.

?And yet, their decision to drink while expecting puts them in the middle of what may be the greatest divide among the pregnant and those who come in contact with them?which, of course, is all of us. That?s because pregnant or not, woman or man, everyone, it seems, has an opinion about everyone else?s drinking habits, especially if the everyone else in question is carrying a child. I?ve seen friends at both ends of the spectrum?from the one who sat at home for the first six months of her pregnancy for fear of doing anything that could possibly harm her baby to the one who took a far more ?European? approach. (If pregnant ladies in Europe are, in fact, doing J?ger shots.) I?m also hearing them judge one another and the comparative health of their babies?out of earshot, of course. And I have to wonder: Is there such a thing as ?drinking safely? while pregnant? And who has the right to say? Are we basing decisions about drinking while pregnant on science? Or something else??

Entertainment for Women
Jessica Francis Kane ? Morning News ? July 2012

The author interviews her mother about life as a secretary at Playboy in 1960s New York City.

?JFK: Were any of your co-secretaries career women, or were they all just working until they got married?

?Mom: Two wanted to sell ad space in the magazine, but no woman would ever have been hired at that time to make the rounds. But maybe they eventually got their wish, attitudes did change ultimately. (By the way, I politely object to the phrasing above, the ?just working until.? Take out the just and I am OK with it.)?

Volleyball-sized fireball streaks across East Coast sky (+video)

NASA confirms that a fireball, as bright as a full moon, was seen from Florida to New England. The Friday night meteor was probably a small "boulder" that entered the Earth's atmosphere.

By Staff,?Associated Press / March 23, 2013

Reports of a flash of light that streaked across the sky over the U.S. East Coast appeared to be a "single meteor event," the U.S. space agency said. Residents from New York City to Washington and beyond lit up social media with surprise.

"Judging from the brightness, we're dealing with something as bright as the full moon," Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environmental Office said Friday. "We basically have (had) a boulder enter the atmosphere over the northeast."

Cooke said the meteor was widely seen, with more than 350 reports on the website of the American Meteor Society alone.

Robert Lunsford of the society told USA Today "it basically looked like a super bright shooting star."

The sky flash was spotted as far south as Florida and as far north as New England, the newspaper reported.

Matt Moore, a news editor with The Associated Press, said he was standing in line for a concert in Philadelphia around dusk when he saw "a brilliant flash moving across the sky at a very brisk pace... and utterly silent."

"It was clearly high up in the atmosphere," he said. "But from the way it appeared, it looked like a plane preparing to land at the airport."

Moore said the flash was visible to him for about two to three seconds, and then it was gone. He described it as having a "spherical shape and yellowish and you could tell it was burning, with the trail that it left behind."

Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, agreed that the sightings had all the hallmarks of a "fireball."

Pitts said this one got more attention because it happened on a Friday evening ? and because Twitter has provided a way for people to share information on sightings.

He said what people likely saw was one meteor ? or "space rock" ? that may have been the size of a volleyball and fell fairly far down into the Earth's atmosphere. He likened it to a stone skipping across the water ? getting "a nice long burn out of it."

Pitts said experts "can't be 100 percent certain of what it was, unless it actually fell to the ground and we could actually track the trajectory."

But he said the descriptions by so many people are "absolutely consistent" with those of a meteor.

The Happy Little Hawkins Family: Drew's Family Birthday Party

Drew celebrated his sixth birthday with Jim's side of the family at his traditional party - the Drew, Brandon, and Sherry party. ?There are three family members with birthdays within the same week, so we always celebrate them together each year. ?The party was at Jim's sister's house this year, and it started with appetizers. ?Maddie hung out in the kitchen with the adults. ?Here she is with Jim's sister, Sharon.

?Maddie loves to eat, so the appetizer table was the perfect place for her to be!
?Drew went downstairs to play Wii and pillow-fight with the older kids.
?Drew's cousin, Danny, is a couple months older than he is, and they always enjoy playing together at all the family gatherings. ?Here they were waiting for their dinner.
?After dinner, the birthday people opened their gifts.
?Drew got some DS and Wii games, and a lot of Angry Birds stuff.
?Maddie spent some time with her Uncle Larry.
One of the things that Jim's sister and brother-in-law got Drew was an Angry Birds hat.
?He loved it!
?Maddie loves Jim's nephew, Greg!
?He can always make her smile.
?Drew danced around while everyone sang "Happy Birthday," and then he decided to skip dessert and go back downstairs to play.
?Maddie was happy to eat her cupcake, of course!
It was a fun evening with the family! ?We were worried that we might have to miss the family party after Drew got sick, but he was feeling fine. ?We were glad that he was able to make it to one of his two parties that weekend! ?We had to postpone his friend party, and we've rescheduled it for this weekend. ?I'll be sure to post some pictures after that party.

Jeff Bezos' Salvaged Apollo Rocket Engines Reach Shore After Ocean Recovery

Returning to Cape Canaveral for the first time since they were used to launch a giant Saturn V moon rocket, the recovered parts from two colossal F-1 engines arrived on shore Thursday (March 21) after more than 40 years spent lost at sea.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos led the private expeditionthat recovered the F-1 engine components, which arrived at the Florida port aboard the multi-purpose vessel Seabed Worker. During their three weeks at sea, the ship's crew worked with remotely operated submersibles to lift the historic space artifacts off the ocean floor from a depth of more than 14,000 feet (4,270 meters) below the surface.

Five F-1 engines were used to power the Saturn V rocket's first stage, which lifted the mighty booster off the launch pad. After firing for nearly three minutes, the F-1 engines were jettisoned and together with the spent first stage fell from a height of about 40 miles (64 kilometers) into the ocean. The force of impacting the water tore the engines apart before the twisted parts sank to the seafloor.

Bezos revealed that his expedition had successfully raised enough parts for two engines in an update posted Wednesday (March 20) to the project's website.

Photos released by Bezos show the engines' thrust chambers, turbines, nozzles and even part of the Saturn V's first stage as they were found on the ocean floor and then aboard the Seabed Worker after being recovered. [Gallery: Apollo rocket engines raised off seafloor]

When intact, the massive engines stood 18.5 feet tall (5.6 m) and 12.2 feet wide (3.7 m). Thirteen Saturn V rockets, with a total of 65 F-1 engines, lifted off on NASA's Skylab and Apollo missions to Earth orbit and the moon between 1967 and 1973.

According to Bezos, it is not yet clear on what mission the two engines his team recovered flew.

Now on land, the rocket engine parts will undergo a restoration effort to halt the corrosive effects of the ocean's water and prepare them for public display. The parts, including those still at the bottom of the ocean, remain NASA property. The space agency has agreed, however, to work with Bezos to exhibit the restored engines.

Though no decisions have been made yet, NASA and Bezos earlier proposed the recovered F-1 engines be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. and at The Museum of Flight in Seattle.

BRAINsmall Reduced Fine Tuning of Brain May Hamper Face Recognition in Autism

FRIDAY, March 22 (HealthDay News) ? A malfunction in a specific group of brain cells may explain why some people with autism have difficulty recognizing faces, a small new study finds.

Researchers used functional MRI to scan the brains of 15 adults with autism. In some of the patients, neurons in the brain area that processes faces ? the fusiform face area (FFA) ? were too broadly ?tuned? to distinguish between facial features of different people.

?When your brain is processing faces, you want neurons to respond selectively so that each is picking up a different aspect of individual faces. The neurons need to be finely tuned to understand what is dissimilar from one face to another,? study senior investigator Maximilian Riesenhuber, an associate professor of neuroscience at Georgetown University Medical Center, said in a center news release.

?What we found in our 15 adult participants with autism is that in those with more severe behavioral deficits, the neurons are more broadly tuned, so that one face looks more like another, as compared with the fine-tuning seen in the FFA of typical adults,? he explained.

?And we found evidence that reduced selectivity in FFA neurons corresponded to greater behavioral deficits in everyday face recognition in our participants,? Riesenhuber added. ?This makes sense. If your neurons cannot tell different faces apart, it makes it more difficult to tell who is talking to you or understand the facial expressions that are conveyed, which limits social interaction.?

Riesenhuber noted that there are wide differences in the ability of people with autism to identify faces, and that some of them have no difficulty doing so.

?But for those that do have this challenge, it can have substantial ramifications ? some researchers believe deficits in face processing are at the root of social dysfunction in autism,? he said.

The study was published online March 15 in the journal NeuroImage: Clinical.
