Scientists discover water ice on Mercury: Ice and organic material may have been carried to the planet by passing comets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, revolves around the sun in a mere 88 days, making a tight orbit that keeps the planet incredibly toasty. Surface temperatures on Mercury can reach a blistering 800 degrees Fahrenheit -- hot enough to liquefy lead.

Now researchers from NASA, MIT, the University of California at Los Angeles and elsewhere have discovered evidence that the scorching planet may harbor pockets of water ice, along with organic material, in several permanently shadowed craters near Mercury's north pole.

The surprising discovery suggests to scientists that both ice and organic material, such as carbon, may have been deposited on Mercury's surface by impacts from comets or asteroids. Over time, this volatile material could then have migrated to the planet's poles.

"We thought the most exciting finding could be that this really was water ice," says Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and a member of the research team. "But the identification of darker, insulating material that may indicate complex organics makes the story even more thrilling."

Zuber and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Science.

Mounting evidence for ice

The possibility that water ice might exist on Mercury is not new: In the 1990s, radar observations detected bright regions near Mercury's poles that scientists believed could be signs of either water ice or a rough planetary surface. However, the evidence was inconclusive for either scenario.

To get a clearer picture of Mercury's polar regions, Zuber and her colleagues analyzed observations taken by NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) mission, a probe that has been orbiting the planet and mapping its topography since April 2011.

Mapping the planet's surface is a challenging task, as the craft must weather the sun's intense radiation, which can "play havoc with electronics," Zuber says. What's more, the probe moves from pole to pole in an elliptical orbit, making for an extremely tricky mapping mission, both dynamically and thermally. Despite these challenges, MESSENGER's onboard laser altimeter has amassed more than 10 laser pulses that have been used to map topography and measure the near-infrared reflectance of the surface.

Last year, researchers analyzed the probe's topographic observations and created a high-resolution map of Mercury; they then overlaid previous radar observations. They found that the bright regions detected in radar lined up with permanently shadowed craters at the planet's north pole -- regions that never see the sun, and which are potentially ideal places for ice to survive. This finding was one more piece of evidence that Mercury might harbor water ice.

Revealing shadows

In this latest analysis of MESSENGER's observations, scientists believe they have found conclusive evidence for water ice on Mercury, although the data was at first puzzling.

The team found that the probe's reflectance measurements, taken via laser altimetry, matched up well with previously mapped radar-bright regions in Mercury's high northern latitudes. Two craters in particular were bright, both in radar and at laser wavelengths, indicating the possible presence of reflective ice. However, just south of these craters, others appeared dark with laser altimetry, but bright in radar.

The observations "threw us off track for a long time," Zuber says, until another team member, David Paige of UCLA, developed a thermal model of the planet. Using MESSENGER observations of Mercury's topography, reflectance and rotational characteristics, the model simulated the sun's illumination of the planet, enabling precise determination of Mercury's temperature at and below the surface.

Results indicated that the unusually bright deposits corresponded to regions where water ice was stable at the surface; in dark regions, ice was stable within a meter of the surface. The dark insulating material is consistent with complex organics that would already be dark but may have been darkened further by the intense radiation at Mercury's surface.

In addition, MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer detected elemental hydrogen in the vicinity of Mercury's north pole. The combination of the compositional, spectral and geometric observations and the thermal models provided a strong, self-consistent explanation for the unusual radar backscatter observations.

Paul Lucey, a professor of geophysics and planetology at the University of Hawaii, points out that MESSENGER has also revealed a number of regions where surfaces were much darker than in previous radar measurements. Lucey interprets these results as possible evidence of receding ice on Mercury's surface.

"This suggests that in the past, ice was more extensive on Mercury, and retreated to its current state," says Lucey, who was not involved in the research. "Even Mercury experiences global warming."

MESSENGER will continue to orbit Mercury, and Zuber says future data may reveal information beyond the planet's surface. "There are still some really good questions to answer about the interior," Zuber says. "I'll tell you, we're not done."

Gifting the New Family - The Baby Shower

Having a baby is but one of the most natural things in life. The time before the little one makes his or her presence felt is also the time in a mommy?s life where she is the center of attention. It is kind of an accepted routine and planning that the event is organized by a group of friends or family. Various cultures are also adopting this method of heralding the arrival of a new born. There are many debates as to whether one can have a shower the second, third or fifth time around for the mom to be, but frankly whose counting! The more the merrier and this works for not only the mom and baby but the dad as well.

There are many Baby Shower Decorations Ideas that are time tested and have worked with buntings and spruce. However, instead of the same old same old, creating ideas with pretty tissue towels, cupcake assemblies, a cake in the shape of a diaper, paper pinwheels, baby shower wreath, or a nursing bottle as a vase, can make the occasion super special. The use of regular everyday stuff as baby shower decorations ideas adds a nice touch and also limits unnecessary expenditure.

Personalizing birthday keepsake gifts can definitely make time stand still. Since children grow up way too fast mementos of their time from the baby shower like a quilt, photo frame, baby shoes and robes, Baptism keepsake box with a children?s Bible, kids artwork etc. are wonderful ways to show the family that you care. There are myriad ways about how one can buy birthday keepsake gifts online but nothing beats a well thought out gift created on your own. Having a fun shower would entail that every little aspect is taken care of by the organizing party. Right from party games, snacks, non alcoholic drinks or cocktails, and games. Most often poker has been the constant game plan, but adding something different with hip hop can get the party started.

Creative baby shower gifts can border from simple to ultra expensive and glamorous. The most common ideas are well stocked diaper bags, a bassinette, homemade booties, baby blankets, stuffed toys, bibs, and many more. Car engines downsized, without sacrificing power

1 hr.

Passengers have a habit of packing some unusual things in their luggage, but when a Ford engineer passed his bag through security recently, it clearly took the TSA X-ray technician by surprise. It?wasn't?a gun, knife or illicit drugs but a big steel block.? More precisely, it was the main piece of a new 1.0-liter engine that Ford will begin offering on its Fiesta subcompact next year.?

With gasoline prices surging to near-record levels and many experts forecasting a steady climb over the next few years, consumers are looking for ways to cut their fuel bills. There?s a clear trend towards downsizing, with?compact and subcompact automobiles increasing their market share substantially.

But Americans have traditionally been believers that big is better, and despite expectations, demand for SUVs and CUVs?hasn't?collapsed. If anything, sales of pickups are, well, picking up again. Yet, these vehicles are getting far more mileage than ever before and downsizing also gets the credit ? but unless you peak under the hood, you may not notice.

Take the Ford F-150. The full-size pickup has traditionally been powered by an assortment of big, bigger and truly enormous V-8s. But over the last year, roughly half the F-Series trucks rolling out of Ford showrooms have been equipped with smaller V-6s.

?The old saying that ?there?s no replacement for displacement? is now obsolete,? said Bob Fascetti, director of global engine operations for Ford.

Downsizing trend
The Detroit automaker?isn't?the only one discarding that old adage. Hyundai delivered quite a shock, a few years ago, when it introduced the latest-generation Sonata line, the midsize sedan coming equipped only with a four-cylinder engine rather than the traditionally prerequisite V-6 option.? A growing number of competitors have since copied that approach.

?The downsizing trend that captures the change in the auto industry is the switch to four-cylinder engines,? notes Jim Farley, Ford?s global marketing czar.

It?s not the first time automakers have downsized powertrains. They tried that strategy in the 1970s and ?80s, following the twin Mideast oil shocks. But the engines they came up with were, to put it bluntly, unfit for the job. Motorists largely steered clear of what were derisively known as ?stone ponies.?

Today?s downsized engines are an entirely different breed, however, thanks to more sophisticated technologies like direct injection, variable valve timing and advanced turbocharging.

?We?ve come a long way in terms of the power output of small engines,? said?Dave Sullivan, auto analyst with AutoPacific, Inc.? And in the process, ?We?ve reached the point where bigger cars can get the fuel economy of smaller cars? without sacrificing much ? if any ? performance.

Consider Ford?s new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the one that caused a stir when the block was put through X-ray.? In decades past, 3-cylinder engines were found on only the lowest-cost econoboxes.? They were rough, slow and generally unpleasant to drive.? The new turbocharged Ford powertrain, however, actually develops substantially more horsepower and wheel-spinning torque than the current 1.6-liter engine found in the Fiesta.

Automotive engineers like to talk about ?specific output,? the amount of power from a given displacement.? The new 1.0-liter EcoBoost produces 123 horsepower per liter. Compare that to the big Lamborghini Aventador, its 6.5-liter V-12 producing ?just? 108 horsepower per liter.

A new age
The trend towards downsized engines isn?t limited to mainstream and economy cars.? Even luxury makers are shifting gears, many buyers demanding more environmentally friendly technology even if they can afford the gas bills.? Bentley recently launched a new V-8 that is a virtual match for the performance of its classic V-8.

Those new technologies, such as direct injection, helped Porsche deliver more horsepower ? even as it bumped up the fuel economy of its latest-generation 911 sports car by a substantial 16 percent.

Of course, other breakthroughs also help, like improved aerodynamic designs and advanced 7-, 8- and even 9-speed transmissions that ensure an engine is always operating at its most efficient RPM speed.

?We?re entering a new age,? said Ford?s Farley, where the latest gasoline-powered drivetrains are now delivering ?fuel economy in the range of what hybrids used to get.?

And so, while advanced powertrains like EcoBoost might carry a modest premium over traditional gas engines, they?re still substantially cheaper than hybrids. That?s one reason, the Ford marketing chief said, why sales of hybrids and battery cars may not be growing as quickly as expected despite this year?s run-up in fuel prices. In fact, he notes industry studies showing some current hybrid buyers ?would switch back? to conventionally powered vehicles.

That said, Farley and other industry executives aren?t ready to write off battery-based vehicles. As good as the latest gas engines are getting, some experts warn the technology may soon hit the wall. And with the recently approved federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard calling for 54.5 mpg by 2025, the industry may still be forced to adopt more hybrids and battery cars ? and push for more vehicle downsizing.

But as the latest 1.0-liter EcoBoost illustrates, the gas engine is showing a lot more life than many had anticipated ? and that?s clearly good news for American motorists who still like their big sedans, pickups and SUVs.

BREE: LNG Dominates in Australian Energy Investment Sector

Committed investment in resources and energy major projects in Australia increased to a record $268.4 billion according to the Resources and Energy Major Projects?October 2012, released by the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics.

The $268.4 billion investment value consists of 87 projects that have received a final investment decision including 51 minerals projects, 18 gas and petroleum projects and 18 infrastructure projects.

??Mega projects? which cost more than $5 billion continue to be the principal driver of the record level of investment in the resources and energy sectors? said Professor Quentin Grafton, Executive Director and Chief Economist at BREE.

There are 11 ?mega projects? identified in the report that account for $201 billion, or 76 per cent of the total committed investment in resources and energy major projects. Most of these are LNG projects located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and Gladstone in Queensland.

In the six months to October 2012, 10 projects worth $13.2 billion were committed to after receiving a positive final investment decision. The largest of these was for an additional LNG train at the Australia Pacific LNG plant at Gladstone, Queensland.

?Looking forward, any substantial net increase to the dollar value of committed projects will require either cost increases to larger, existing projects and/or a new final investment decision on a large project within the coming year? said Professor Grafton.

Europe's largest public-private partnership dedicated to the development of manufacturing sustainable pharmaceuticals has been launched. It's being led by The University of Manchester and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

The 26.4 (21.2M) project, CHEM21, brings together six pharmaceutical companies, 13 Universities and four small to medium enterprises from across Europe. The aim is to develop sustainable biological and chemical alternatives to finite materials, such as precious metals, which are currently used as catalysts in the manufacture of medicines.

Introducing biotechnology to the manufacturing processes for medicines will limit the drain on the world's resources and have a lasting benefit on the environment.

Professor Nicholas Turner from The University of Manchester commented "This is a unique opportunity for academic groups to work alongside pharmaceutical companies and specialist SMEs to develop innovative catalytic processes for pharmaceutical synthesis. We believe that challenging problems of this nature are best solved on a pan-European basis by bringing together under one roof the combined expertise of many groups to establish a world-class research hub in catalysis and sustainable chemical synthesis."

CHEM21 will run initially for four years with funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative. The project will establish a European research hub to act as a source of up-to-date information on green chemistry. It will also develop training packages to ensure that the principles of sustainable manufacturing are embedded in the education of future scientists

Commenting on the news, John Baldoni from GlaxoSmithKline said: "Improving the sustainability of our drug manufacturing processes through collaborations such as CHEM21 will not only reduce our industry's carbon footprint, but will provide savings that can be reinvested in the development of new medicines, increase access to medicines through cost reduction and drive innovations that will simplify and transform our manufacturing paradigm"

CHEM21 launched in October and work is already underway on this ground breaking project.

Video: Obama looks for public support in fiscal cliff negotiations

>>> welcome back. in a couple of hours the president is expected to sit down once again with business leaders as part of what politico calls his outside in strategy when it comes to the fiscal cliff negotiations. instead of meeting with republicans behind closed doors the president urging the public to apply pressure on the gop. earlier today, the president met with middle class americans at the white house and urged house republicans to extend tax cuts . democrats say would benefit 98% of americans and 97% of small businesses .

>> today, i'm asking congress to listen to the people who sent us here to serve. i'm asking americans all across the country to make your voice heard. it's too important for washington to screw this up.

>> and just a few hours ago we found out the president will be hosting mitt romney for lunch at the white house tomorrow. it will be their first face to face since the last presidential debate and since governor romney accused the president of essentially buying the election. meanwhile, speaker boehner trying to keep the party's message united with taxes and pushing back against statements of gop congressman cole for republicans to fall in line with the president.

>> i told tom earlier in our conference meeting that disagreed with him. you won't grow the economy if you raise tax rates on the top two rates. it will hurt small businesses , hurt our economy.

>> so let's bring in the political panel on this topic for today. erin mcpike back with us and david goodfriend , democratic strategist and contributor. thank you for sticking around. let's bring in the element of tom cole , a republican of oklahoma. doesn't get more red than oklahoma. let's play what he said regarding support and passing the middle class tax cut .

>> in my view, we all agree we won't raise taxes on people making less than $250,000. we should take them out of this discussion right now.

>> what is the issue with that?

>> well, what congressman cole has really shown is that there's an imminent amount of good logic and sense in preserving the current tax rates for 98% of americans for a lot of reasons. one of which is the gdp dependent on consumer spending . 0% of the economy is consumer spending . if you take $2,000 on average out of pockets of consumers, it's going to hurt the economy so right away you have a low tax good economic rational behind it but there are politics here, too, of course, and that is the republican party just got she lacked in an election and learning that the only way to expand their popularity, expand their base is if they stop being perceived as the party of wealthy white people and start being perceived as more appeal and i think that congressman's statement goes to the fact that we need to separate the tax rates for the top 2% as an issue from the tax rates of everybody else. that's so-called decoupling is really important and it's something that i think the republican party increasingly sees as necessary for its own image.

>> erin , our first read team puts it this way. this is how they address it. house republicans right now don't have the upper hand in negotiations and going to have to grapple with raising rates at least in the short time and cole is actually giving them a way out of this box short term which is to do the decouple as we heard david refer to on rates and live to fight another day. why is it that more republicans at least at this point not vocalizing same things we have heard from cole , you think?

>> republicans are angry with cole up here on capitol hill because the last piece, raising the rates on the last 2% is the last bargaining chip they have and i've talked to many republicans saying privately by the end of the negotiations they may very well have to give on that but they want democrats to come to the table with entitlement reform at least on medicare and they don't want to give up rates until they get that so we're going to see a lot of hand wringing over this cole comment for a couple of days.

>> david , there's also hand wringing over what senator dick durbin said in the speech at the center for american progress and we have this, dick durbin , not what he said but didn't say and preparled remarks he said progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of the social security , medicare and medicaid but those conversations should not be a part of a plan to avert the fiscal cliff and prepared remarks. he didn't say that in the speech. you have a lot of republicans on the -- excuse me, democrats on the left greatly concerned about what will happen to medicare and quite honestly not ready to put that conversation on the table.

>> well, i think that's correct. you're speaking about a certain percentage of democrats. i would include in that list bernie sander who is sent out an e-mail blast today saying medicare , medicare and social security should all be off the table. now, in reality, i think social security really can be and should be off the table because it's not a contributor to the federal deficit. it's well funded for decades ahead but if you look at medicare , here's what the president has to say about that. the president says look at the budget i originally submitted to congress and you will see i have put in excruciating detail cuts to the medicare program that i think we can afford so the president has put that forward. there are those in his party to his left who would like to push back on that. but what we have missing from this discussion right now i think is that same level of specificity coming from the republican side on any of the cuts that they have talked about. i mean, that the nuts and bolts of a negotiation over budget deal so, yes, you have laid out this sort of landscape of the politics and where the cuts would come from and in particular the fact that the administration put forward medicare reforms but what we don't see from the other side is specificity on revenues. the republicans say, yes, we need more revenues but they're not willing to exactly spell out what that means and that's missing from their side of the discussion.

>> let's move to the hot topic of tomorrow. mitt romney visiting the white house as i've pointed out first face to face since the final debate. also since the remarks of governor romney revealing he believes the president won essentially because he gave out what he called gifts to portions of his base. david , to be a fly on the wall , what is the point, first of all, to have mitt romney there? i get it with senator mccain , a senator at the time. mitt romney doesn't hold a position and many turned against him.

>> well, here's what i think this is about. the president believes in his heart and i can tell you this i think as a long-time supporter of his i believe this firmly. the president wants to get a deal done. he really does. he does not want to send the country over the fiscal cliff.

>> he needs mitt romney to do that?

>> he needs republicans to cooperate with him, yes. and i think if mitt romney were to come forward and say, we need a deal, we shouldn't go over the cliff, should be give and take on both sides, that would have tremendous impact because, you know, close to 50% of the country voted for guy. he does represent a large swath of the american population that voted for him and he can come forward and say, let's put politics aside. rise above as my friends at cnbc say and get a deal done.

>> erin , i think there are a lot of people that just gasped listening to david because the other side of that -- i'm going to be honest -- people believe that those who are republicans were not voting for mitt romney . they were voting against president obama . before that vote, we did not have the tape of mitt romney saying that many of the people who voted for the president just wanted gifts and that would apply to a large group of people right now worried about entitlement reform in addition to that, erin , we saw republicans turn on mitt romney in droves right after that comment. so what influence does he have if he said, come on, can't we all get along, who would listen?

>> no one really. mitt romney lost a lot of ka shay with the rest of the --

>> david --

>> that made me feel bad.

>> checked by erin . that's a spanking right there on national tv .

>> this meeting is just about making --

>> spectacular.

>> just want to make nice after a very difficult election and these debates uncomfortable for a lot of viewers. they have just engaged in a long campaign. they want to make nice.

>> should mitt romney bring a gift?

>> that's a good question. maybe so.

>> we'll see. maybe we'll pose it as a gut check tomorrow. thank you, guys, for your time. david , you can call erin and take up your issue with her. thank you.

Sea Levels Rising Faster Than Projected

New satellite measurements suggest that global sea levels are rising faster than the most recent projections by the United Nations' climate change panel.

The new report found that sea levels are rising at an annual rate of 0.12 inches (3.2 millimeters) ? 60 percent faster than the best estimate of 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) per year, which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calculated in 2007.

"This study shows once again that the IPCC is far from alarmist, but in fact has underestimated the problem of climate change," German oceanographer and climatologist Stefan Rahmstorf, who led the study, said in a statement. "That applies not just for sea-level rise, but also to extreme events and the Arctic sea-ice loss."

Satellites, which measure changes in sea level by bouncing radar waves off the sea surface, provide much more accurate measurements than tide gauges, because they have near-global coverage, as opposed to just coastal coverage, researchers say.

In addition to the change in sea level, the team assessed another marker of global warming ? the overall warming trend of global temperatures. But their results closely corresponded with the IPCC's fourth assessment report, finding that the current overall warming trend of global temperatures is 0.28 degrees Fahrenheit (0.16 degrees Celsius) per decade.

Seas-level rise is thought to be driven by glacier melt as well as a phenomenon known as thermal expansion, which occurs when ocean water expands as it warms. Rising tides are a concern because they boost the threat of extreme flooding in populous coastal areas, putting millions of people at risk worldwide. The IPCC estimated the seas would rise up to an average of 6.6 feet (2 meters) by 2100, though some areas are expected to be hit harder than others.

The team involved in the new study included scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the consulting firm Tempo Analytics and the French Laboratoire d'Etudes en G?ophysique et Oc?anographie Spatiales (LEGOS).

Their findings appear today (Nov. 28) in the journal Environmental Research Letters, as delegates from 190 countries meet in Doha, Qatar, this week for the U.N.'s Climate Change Conference. The IPCC's next comprehensive report on the state of climate change is due out by 2014.

Analysis: Confusing hard and soft power in emerging markets

LONDON (Reuters) - Deserting debt-laden, recession-racked North Atlantic and Japan for the fast-growing emerging market world may have been irresistible for some investors but many others still remain timid.

Why? It may be a case of "hard power" versus "soft power".

If investment decisions hinged solely on the former - measured by raw data such as economic output, population size and military spending - then convergence between rich and developing nation blocs is nigh on complete.

Adjusted for currencies' purchasing power, emerging economies on aggregate reached a "watershed" in 2012 and became as large as the rich developed world, estimates hedge fund manager Stephen Jen.

That train has long left the station, of course, and may well be only part way through its odyssey. According to Goldman Sachs, the giant economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China alone are expected to surge from a fifth of global output today to a third by 2020.

Using an index of "hard power" traced back to the early 1800s, with inputs such as iron and steel production, energy use, urban population and per capita military spending, Jen reckons dispersion of hard power between the top economies of the United States, Europe, Japan, China and Russia is at its lowest for 200 years.

But he reckons the world is still some way off equality of "soft power" - classed variously as the ability to influence ideas through culture, education, democracy or diplomacy but also capturing "intangibles" such as social justice, good corporate governance, transparency of law or open markets.

There's no direct gauge of this fuzzier "soft power". But if you take gauges such as Transparency International's "corruption perceptions index" as one possible component, then no major emerging economy comes in the top 20 apart from long-standing financial centers such as Singapore and Hong Kong.

Through investment eyes at least, the lags in this sort of "soft" development go some way to explaining why emerging financial markets remain far behind in terms of size, liquidity, depth, transparency and legal protections and why they have so badly underperformed of late despite all the "hard" metrics.

The lion's share of world private investable capital still originates in the western world. A recent study by analysts at TheCityUK showed that more than 70 percent of the almost $80 trillion of pension, insurer and mutual fund assets is still based in the United States, Europe and Japan.

And it's this relative gap on "soft power" that may still determine investment success or failure in the years ahead.

"This grating of the tectonic plates - with the real economies moving past each other but with the emerging world continuing to rely on developed countries' financial markets - will continue to create distortions and volatility in the global financial markets," Jen said.

These distortions have been evident for over a decade as booming China and other giants without adequate financial markets of their own banked their new-found and largely state-managed wealth in the west, exaggerated the credit bubble there and triggered sometimes violent and unpredictable capital flows.

SEISMIC REVERSALS

On a simple level, emerging underperformance of late may just be a function of an integrated world economy where no market is immune from shocks in its richest trading partners.

But even stock markets in the austerity-sapped recession economies of the euro zone periphery have as a group performed better than the BRIC equity indices for two years in a row now.

And while developed world equity at large is up 6 percent over the past two years, emerging markets are still down 10 percent.

There are many explanations, some related to the speed in which markets priced the long-term economic projections in the early part of the millennium with a 500 percent advance in BRIC markets between in the six years to 2007, for example.

This gets to the bigger worry of whether emerging markets are deep and liquid enough to absorb a wholesale shift of western capital without periodic seismic reversals that unnerve relatively conservative investors like pension funds.

In what Bank of England economist Andrew Haldane described last year as the "big fish, small pond" problem, rapid capital shifts quickly create overvaluation and he reckoned just a 1 percent shift in western pension funds to emerging markets was equivalent to some 10 percent of their entire capitalization.

So much so that even though investors in global equities would have increased money up to four fold over the past 20 years, equity investors who spotted China's explosive boom as early as 1993 are still in the red. Shorter-term, Brazil's real has lost 20 percent since March with no ostensible "crisis".

Emerging bond markets have done much better of late, up more than 15 percent in 2012 for example. But much of these are hard currency fixed contracts governed by New York or London law.

Citing demand for property in London or New York at the worst points of the recent global crisis, Citi Private Bank's Chief Investment Officer Richard Cookson reckons some simple rules apply that still make many wary of emerging markets.

"After decades of crises, you may ask what's with the emerging world? The answer is rule of law, property rights, corruption, failed institutions. How much of that has changed? Not much."

What's more, it's not at all obvious that the mega emerging economies like China even have the desire to move toward a center ground on financial soft power at least.

"China wants the prestige of a global power but not the responsibilities," said Michal Meidan, Asia analyst at political risk consultancy Eurasia. "They would be happy to be considered a global financial power but they are not ready for the responsibility of shoring up the global financial system."

Belarus evicts leading human rights organization | Amnesty ...

A leading Belarusian human rights NGO had its office confiscated in the capital Minsk on Monday, in what Amnesty International called a blatant violation of Belarus? international human rights obligations.

Representatives of the Ministry of Justice, police and a city gas company arrived at the Minsk office of Human Rights Centre Viasna on Monday morning to close it down and seal off the premises.

The eviction ? which comes shortly after Belarus denied an Amnesty International representative access to the country ? was part of a sentence imposed on Viasna?s chair Ales Bialiatski a year ago.

?The confiscation of Viasna?s office is a blatant violation of Belarus? international human rights obligations to respect and protect the right to freedom of association,? said David D?az-Jogeix, Deputy Director of Amnesty International?s Europe and Central Asia Programme.

?The right to form associations ? even if they peacefully promote ideas that differ with popular opinion in society and the government ? is a basic human right and a cornerstone of any democratic society. The Belarusian Constitution guarantees everyone the right to freedom of association, yet every day we see the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression violated in Belarus.?

Bialiatski ? chair of Viasna as well as Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights ? was arrested in central Minsk on 4 August 2011.

He was put on trial and on 24 November last year he was convicted of tax evasion ?on a large scale? ? relating to the use of personal bank accounts in Lithuania and Poland to support Viasna?s human rights work in Belarus.

Amnesty International has declared Bialiatski a prisoner of conscience, and previously said his trial was unfair. The organization pointed out that Bialiatski was forced to open accounts abroad after the Belarusian authorities de-recognized Viasna in 2003, which barred the NGO from registering or opening a bank account in Belarus.

Bialiatski?s conviction carried a four-and-a-half year prison sentence ? which he is currently serving in a prison colony ? as well as a fine and the confiscation of property, including Viasna?s office.

On 17 November, Bialiatski's wife Natalia Pinchuk received a letter from the First of May district court in Minsk informing her that Viasna?s office and all other property would be confiscated on 26 November.

?Neither repression against our leader and members of the Human Rights Centre Viasna, nor the confiscation of our office will stop the work,? said Valentin Stefanovich, Viasna?s acting head.?

?We are not going to stop any aspects of the legitimate human rights work of the organization. All victims of human rights violations can count on us as before for help and support,? Stefanovich said.

Stifling human rights work

The confiscation of Viasna?s office comes amid an increasingly difficult climate for those working to defend human rights in Belarus.

On 10 October the Belarusian authorities denied an Amnesty International researcher an entry visa for the first time since the organization began working on the country in the 1990s.

?Despite being given several opportunities, the Belarusian authorities have failed to clarify why the organization was denied a visa for the first time in more than a decade, leading us to conclude that the decision was politically motivated,? said D?az-Jogeix.

Is It Wise to Choose a Foundation Repair Contractor Based on Their ...

Using the web to find a contractor you can trust with your money? and your home

The title of this article raises an interesting and relevant question. In a world dominated by the internet, it?s important to know how much we can trust what we find online. The web can be a tool for finding extremely useful information and services. But when you flip that coin over, you can also find yourself falling into money-pit type traps that will leave you wishing you had thrown your laptop in the garbage and looked in the phonebook instead.

So let?s address the question head-on: is it wise to choose a contractor based on their website? Here?s the short answer: no. However, the complete answer is more in-depth than that. There are a lot of factors at play here.

A company website can certainly be used to decide NOT to hire someone.?You see, anyone can put up a website that looks nice. But there are some tell tale signs of a company that can?t be trusted. For example, if there are no customer reviews, you need to run and run quick. It either means the company doesn?t value customer input, or no positive reviews exists that they can flaunt. Also, if the website is too much hype, leave. You don?t need them to beat you over the head with their sales message. A useful site seeks to offer useful information first. The sales message should take a back seat. Otherwise you can bet they will be pushy. And by pushy, we mean they are going to try to dig deep into your wallet fast.

Now then you have the classic signs of a sketchy site. Pop up ads, keyword stuffing, and bad links. If you find any of this, run.

If it?s a trustworthy contractor, what you should find is plenty of good information on how to repair foundations, how to spot foundation issues, and things like that.

Web 2.0 is where it?s at in 2012.?Finding a worthwhile contractor online involves much more than simply Googling a company website and making a phone call or shooting an email. In this day and age of social media, multiple internet avenues exist for you to check out a company. For example, what is being said on Twitter about the?foundation repair?company? How many people are following their account? This could be a good picture into how helpful they really are. The same goes for their number of Facebook likes. And did you check them out on a site like Yelp to make sure people give them positive reviews?

Look at the BBB site.?What is their customer rating? Has anyone filed a formal complaint against them? And if so, how did they respond? Did they break their backs to try and make a satisfied customer? Or did they respond harshly and pompously?

The web is a fantastic place to find help from basement contractors. Just make sure you don?t get enamored by a decent looking website without really checking out the company.

"Shadow of Roh" neck and neck with dictator's daughter before South Korea polls

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's December presidential election looks set to turn into a referendum on two of the country's most polarizing leaders as the daughter of military dictator Park Chung-hee faces off against a former aide to ex-President Roh Moo-hyun.

Park's authoritarian rule propelled South Korea from poverty to the cusp of developed-nation status and ended when he was assassinated in 1979. The left-wing Roh's single five-year term closed in chaos as economic reforms failed and a policy of engagement with North Korea was wrecked as Pyongyang pushed ahead with a nuclear weapons program.

Roh committed suicide in 2010 after bribery charges dogged his retirement.

The conservative candidate, Park Geun-hye, 60, who is bidding to become South Korea's first woman president, and left-winger Moon Jae-in, 59, formally registered their candidacies on Sunday after independent Ahn Cheol-soo dropped out to support Moon.

"It is going to be a negative election campaign," said Kim Jun-seok, a political science professor at Dongguk University in Seoul. "People will split between the 'pro-growth' generation that supports Park Chung-hee and the 'pro-distribution' generation that supports Roh Moo-hyun."

Initial polls showed Moon had a slight edge over Park as Ahn's supporters rallied behind a candidate who has pledged engagement with North Korea, to renegotiate a free trade agreement with the United States, to increase taxes on the wealthy and tackle the power of big business.

A survey from pollster Realmeter published on Saturday put Moon, who says his favorite political moniker is "Shadow of Roh", on 48.1 percent versus Park's 46.2 percent. Broadcaster MBC gave Moon 41.2 percent to Park's 39.2 percent.

The lead was within the margin of error and success for Moon will likely hinge on whether he and his Democrat United Party, which failed to oust the ruling conservatives in parliamentary polls in April, can win the support of Ahn supporters who wanted a break with South Korea's established political parties.

Polls showed that Ahn, a software mogul and philanthropist, had until recently been rated the candidate more able to beat Park and to galvanize the support of disenchanted young voters.

Analysts cautioned against reading too much into the polls which also showed that between a quarter and a third of Ahn supporters were now undecided.

"Despite the latest surveys showing Moon Jae-in has a slight lead, the two main players are running neck and neck in the race," said Kim Kwang-Dong, chief analyst at independent political think-tank the Nara Policy Institute.

In addition to Park and Moon, two fringe candidates have so far also registered.

    CONFRONTATION POLITICS, CLASS WARFARE

Park, who disappeared from public life after the death of her father and re-emerged as a politician in 1997 when South Korea was plunged into the Asian financial crisis, has made two previous bids to win the conservative candidacy.

Fighting back tears at a press conference at which a flustered Park initially misspoke and said she would step down from the presidency, she formally registered her candidacy on Sunday and pledged an era of "national reconciliation".

"If I do not receive your confidence at the presidential election, I will be ending my political journey," she said.

Like Moon, Park has promised greater "economic democracy" and better social welfare, although she has stressed that the big family-run businesses that dominate South Korea - the so-called chaebol - are essential to the country's success and its ability to create jobs.

She has termed her father's coup as "unavoidable and the best possible choice". At the same time, she says she has always been "apologetic" to victims of her father's push for industrialization, when he suppressed dissent in the face of threats from North Korea.

Moon has refused to visit the grave of Park Chung-hee, who put him in prison, and says that his daughter enjoyed a life of luxury in the presidential mansion and cannot understand the difficulties of ordinary people.

"When I was living in poverty, she was living the life of a princess in the Blue House," Moon said when he declared his candidacy earlier this year. "When I was fighting against dictatorship, she was at the heart of it."

On Sunday, he returned to the theme, setting the stage for a bitter final few weeks of campaigning that political analysts said would likely turn off many uncommitted voters.

"Please choose the force that can safeguard people's welfare and livelihoods and square up to the forces that protect the chaebol and the privileged class," Moon said.

30 Years of Breast Screening: 1.3 Million Wrongly Treated | Pakalert ...

    Sayer Ji

The breast cancer industry?s holy grail (that mammography is the primary weapon in the war against breast cancer) has been disproved. In fact, mammography appears to have CREATED 1.3 million cases of breast cancer in the U.S. population that were not there.

A disturbing new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine is bringing mainstream attention to the possibility that mammography has caused far more harm than good in the millions of women who have employed it over the past 30 years as their primary strategy in the fight against breast cancer.[i]

Titled ?Effect of Three Decades of Screening Mammography on Breast-Cancer Incidence,? researchers estimated that among women younger than 40 years of age, breast cancer was overdiagnosed, i.e. ?tumors were detected on screening that would never have led to clinical symptoms,? in 1.3 million U.S. women over the past 30 years. In 2008, alone, ?breast cancer was overdiagnosed in more than 70,000 women; this accounted for 31% of all breast cancers diagnosed.?

As we revealed in a previous article,[ii] the primary form of mammography-detected breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as ?stage zero? or ?non-invasive breast cancer.? Unlike truly invasive cancer, which expands outward like the crab after which it was named (Greek:? Cancer = Crab), ductal carcinoma is in situ, i.e. situated, non-moving ? an obvious contradiction in terms.

Also, DCIS presents without symptoms in the majority of women within which it is detected, and if left untreated will (usually) not progress to cause harm to women. Indeed, without x-ray diagnostic technologies, many if not most of the women diagnosed with it would never have known they had it in the first place. The journal Lancet Oncology, in fact, published a cohort study last year finding that even clinically verified ?invasive? cancers appear to regress with time if left untreated:

[We] believe many invasive breast cancers detected by repeated mammography screening do not persist to be detected by screening at the end of 6 years, suggesting that the natural course of many of the screen-detected invasive breast cancers is to spontaneously regress.[iii]

The new study authors point out ?The introduction of screening mammography in the United States has been associated with a doubling in the number of cases of early-stage breast cancer that are detected each year.? And yet, they noted, only 6.5% of these early-stage breast cancer cases were expected to progress to advanced disease. DCIS and related ?abnormal breast findings,? in other words, may represent natural, benign variations in breast morphology. Preemptive treatment strategies, however, are still employed today as the standard of care, with mastectomy rates actually increasing since 2004.[iv]

The adverse health effects associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment with lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone-suppressive treatments cannot be underestimated, especially when one considers the profound psychological trauma that follows each stage of diagnosis and treatment, and the additional physiological burdens such psychic injuries lead to, including up-regulation of multidrug resistance genes within cancer as a result of the increased adrenaline associated with the ?flight-or-fight? stress response.[v]

Also, it is now coming to light that chemotherapy and radiation actually increase the proportion of the highly malignant cancer stem cells to the relatively non-malignant daughter cells within the tumor colony. Much in the same way that conventional antibiotic agents will drive multidrug resistance within the subpopulation of surviving post-antibiotic bacteria, ensuring recurrence, conventional treatments also drive the surviving stem-cell enriched tumor populations into greater resistance and metastatic potential when it does inevitably recur. Or worse, radiation therapy may actually increase the ?stemness? of breast cancer cells making them 30 times more malignant (capable of forming new tumors).

If it is indeed true that DCIS, other abnormal breast findings, as well as clinically confirmed invasive breast cancer, either remain benign or regress when left untreated, the entire breast cancer industry, which is already deeply mired in cause-marketing conflicts of interest, must radically reform itself, or face massive financial and ethical liabilities vis-?-vis outdated and no longer ?evidence-based? practices.

Another serious problem with mammography (and there are dozens of them) not addressed in this latest research finding concerns the unique carcinogenicity of the x-rays the technology employs. We now know that the 30 kVp radiation, colloquially known as ?low energy? x-rays, are between 300-400% more carcinogenic than the ?higher energy? radiation given off by atomic bomb blasts (200 kVp or higher).[vi]? Present day radiation risk models used to assess the known breast cancer risk associated with mammography against the purported benefits do not take into this profound discrepancy. In fact, these models were developed before DNA was even discovered.

Also, considering that breast cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1/BRCA2, interfere with the DNA self-repair mechanisms needed to reduce the carcinogenicity associated with radiation exposure within those who carry these genetic variations, the harms associated with mammography may be exponentially higher than the conventional medical community presently understands and communicates to their patients.? Indeed, it is likely that x-ray based mammography screenings have been planting the seeds of future radiation-induced breast cancer within exposed populations.

With top-tier biomedical journals now publishing research diametrically opposed to the policies and recommendations of both governmental, non-governmental and industry-sponsored health organizations, the time is ripe for us to critically evaluate conventional medicine?s conventional standard of care and to educate ourselves further to the true causes of cancer, and how to go about preventing and/or removing them.
