Novel materials: Smart and magnetic
Jan. 28, 2013 ? Varying magnetic fields and temperature conditions help to elucidate smart materials' transitory magnetic disorder
Novel, smart materials like shape memory alloys very often display so-called glass-like magnetism. Other smart materials with similar properties include those which, when exposed to a magnetic field, change their electrical resistance, known as manganites, or change their temperature, known as magnetocaloric materials. Kaustav Mukherjee and his colleagues from the Consortium for Scientific Research Indore in India studied a key stage in the formation of such a magnetic glass material, called Pr0.5 Ca0.5 Mn0.975 Al0.025 O3, in a paper about to be published in The European Physical Journal B.
They focused on the stage where 'water to ice' style transformation -- referred to as first-order magnetic transformation -- is arrested upon cooling. This is a phenomenon dubbed kinetic arrest, corresponding to a temperature where the material undergoes a transition from a magnetic to a non-magnetic state, with the two phases competing with each other.
Glass-like magnetic materials display fragile magnetic properties. They draw their name from the similarity to the fragility observed in conventional, chemical glass. If a magnetic field is applied while the sample is cooled to what is referred to as its transition temperature, magnetisation of the sample increases and the material becomes magnetic. However, the magnetisation continues to increase further with time, even if the magnetic field and temperature remain constant.
The authors performed bulk measurements of magnetisation on powder samples of Pr0.5 Ca0.5 Mn0.975 Al0.025 O3, at the transition point between magnetic and non-magnetic states. To do so, they simultaneously varied both the magnetic field and the temperature of the sample. They observed the formation of the kinetic arrest band and showed that it is inversely correlated with states reached at extremes of temperature described at supercooling and superheating bands. They then established that the kinetic arrested state is different from the supercooled state.

U.S. Military Little Affected by Flu Epidemic
The influenza epidemic that has been battering the United States has had little effect on the nation's military. That may be due, in large part, to the extremely high flu vaccination rate in all five services. The Department of Defense is also responsible for healthcare for many military dependents and for many military retirees, and those illness rates are also below civilian levels. This is in marked contrast to the pandemic influenza outbreak of 2009-10 that resulted in hundreds of illnesses in active duty military and forces postponement of some missions due to widespread illness.
2012-2013 Influenza Epidemic
The Jan. 24 Influenza Surveillance Summary from the Department of Defense shows that 96 percent of all active duty military personnel have been vaccinated for influenza this year. The Air Force and Coast Guard report a vaccination rate of 98 percent, the Army 97 percent, the Navy 94 percent and the Marine Corps is reporting a vaccination rate of 90 percent. Three active duty soldiers have had to be hospitalized this flu season, according to the Army. Worldwide, the various strains of influenza in circulation remain similar to those found by the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. civilian population except in Africa. The Army hospital in Kenya has detected only influenza B strains in central Africa and no influenza in east Africa. The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center noted in a Jan. 15 report that influenza-like illness rates in non-military patients treated in the military health network are not beyond those expected in a moderately severe influenza season.
2009-2012 Pandemic Influenza
The U.S. military began vaccinating for pandemic H1N1 influenza in October 2009. Prior to that point, the military experienced a high level of flu illnesses and related hospitalizations, especially in young people. Both serving military personnel and dependents were affected. Between April 1, 2009, and June 25, 2009, the military treated 1,327 pandemic flu cases, including 722 in active duty personnel and 31 in recruits. Median ages for all patients were significantly lower than those expected for seasonal influenza patients. The USS Dubuque was pulled from a mission on May 5 due to an influenza outbreak aboard the ship. In August, the Defense Department reported that Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany had a cluster of pandemic flu cases in its patients that were acquired in the hospital.
2009 Air Force Academy Outbreak
In June 2009, 1,376 cadets reported to the Air Force Academy. A pandemic flu outbreak over the next month resulted in 134 confirmed and 33 suspected illnesses from pandemic flu. This outbreak is among the most studied in modern times. Studies confirmed a number of suspicions about the spread of influenza, including the fact that the virus was still being shed by patients up to a week after the illness began.
The current influenza season does not seem to be impacting the United States military in the way that pandemic influenza did. The military healthcare system has vaccinated the vast majority of active duty personnel, and illnesses seem to be at or below expected rates among dependents and retirees.

Heat that escapes into the atmosphere from the energy used to warm homes, drive cars and run factories is altering the jet stream and causing wintertime temperatures to rise in remote, sparsely populated stretches of the Northern Hemisphere, according to a new study.
The finding helps explain a mismatch of up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) between the observed temperature in some regions and what is produced by models that simulate the global climate. Scientists had attributed the mismatch to natural variability or errors in the models.
"We put in our energy consumption [to the models], and bingo! We saw that same pattern," Ming Cai, a meteorologist at Florida State University, told NBC News.
Most of the world?s energy is consumed in the world?s major cities, which tend to be located along the coasts of North America, Europe and Asia. Thus, that's where most of the world's waste heat is generated as well.
Cai said he and his colleagues "squashed our hands for a very long time" trying to figure out how the waste heat from cities such as London, Beijing, Los Angeles and New York came to warm up winters in the Canadian Prairie, Russia and Northern Asia. "But we do have some partial story to tell," he said.
The team reckons that heat rises up from the cities and interrupts the jet stream, making it "weaker in the middle and wider," he explained. This changes the dynamics of the jet stream enough that it enhances the flow of southerly winds. As a result, more warm air from the south blows north.
"What causes that temperature change is not the energy consumption itself, rather the energy consumption changes the circulation, and that changed circulation causes additional warming in other places," he said.
The changed circulation is thought to have an opposite effect in Europe, causing a cooling effect that amounts to 1.8 degrees F (1 degree C), experienced mostly in the fall.?
The net effect on global temperature is almost negligible, the researchers note, but it does help explain why some regions experience warmer winters than projected by the models.?
"That pattern is not some natural variability or something wrong with the models," Cai said. "It?s just that we haven?t considered this atmospheric forcing, which is energy consumption, in our model."
The findings were published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change. In addition to Cai, the authors of "Energy Consumption and the Unexplained Winter Warming over Northern Asia and North America" include Guang Zhang and Aixue Yu.
