Interesting. Necessity is the mother of invention. On a related note something like 50% of the oil in a conventional oil well is left behind, although I believe they are getting better at extracting that as well.

Of course, if the UK and the US stopped importing immigrants that would slow down population growth and the resulting need for more amd more oil and gas. But that would mame sense.
